In the first part of the tour as you wind your way to the city of Greenville on the southern tip of Moosehead Lake. Start tour in the town of Skowhegan by taking Route 150 to Route 151 in Athens. Follow Route 151 west of Newport where you can pick up Route 7 to Dover-Foxcroft. Take Route 6 to Guilford, then follow Route 6 / 15 north to Greenville.
At Greenville stop and relax a little. Greenville is a center for those who seek leisure for hunting, fishing, hiking and boating in the region. It also houses a number of attractions in the region. One of the attractions such as the 110-foot SS Katahdin, a popular, a steamboat that cruises on Moosehead Lake during the summer and through the fall foliage. Sale of downtown Greenville. Once at Rockwood will see through water, the majestic Mount Kineo with its cliff face that rises 700 feet over the deepest point in Moosehead Lake.
Follow the road 6 / 15 and head west to Jackman. This 30-mile scenic portion of the unit is all about Maine wilderness. You'll find plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the fall foliage views in the hills and vistas of lakes and ponds along the road.
Just south of Route 6 Jackman / 15 will connect with Highway 201 and follow Route 201 south to The Forks along the National Scenic Byway. Jackman is a center for canoeing, famous for the 42 mile trip from Rio Moose Bow. The journey takes two days by canoe or more and is a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts. It is one of the few remaining wilderness canoe TRIPS in the Northeast and tours are managed by local operators.
Continue on Route 201 South to the fork where the Kennebec and Dead rivers. The Forks is base for popular Whitewater and imposing rafting trips on both rivers. A few miles west of Forks is Moxie Falls, 90 feet one of the highest waterfalls in New England.
The scenic drive continues south on Route 201 in Bingham. This section of the route follows Kennebec River in Caratunk, offering a splendid view over the river and surrounding mountains, and is one of the best parts of fall foliage on this tour. Sometimes stop and wonder how the river has carved a wonderful landscape to admire us. If you have a camera - Use it!
Follow Route 201 back to Skowhegan to complete the journey.
Unlike other landscape units, New England, The main attraction of this is the natural beauty and rugged wilderness of Maine, rather than cities or towns and other historical monuments. It is a drive to build outdoor holidays in all, but is also an ideal weekend getaway fall foliage.
