I used my road trip planner to plan 8-day trip to the Big Island and found plenty to see and do on the Kona coast only really need two weeks to fully explore the island. Thus, by combining my experience of the coast of Kona with the recommendations of the premises, now therefore a two week trip of the road will complete the processing of Big Island.

I recommend staying one week on the coast of Kona and Hilo next to have an ideal starting point for your many explorations. We started our road trip planning on the Kona coast, the sunniest region. We stayed in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Ironman headquarters (scheduled for October 11 this year) and home of revered King Kamehameha, the leader who unified the islands. He has a great promenade and the pier, where you can enjoy dinner each evening to soak up the sun on the horizon water. My favorite was the Kona Brewing Company (cooked with garlic, focaccia and house fused R / gorgonzola).

Make sure to include a large number of beaches on its agenda for travel. Divers should go to Kahaluu Beach Park, surfers to White Sands Beach, enthusiasts of the privacy Kona Coast State Park and beach lovers can choose among Anaehoomalu Bay, Hapuna Beach and Mauna Kea Beach.

Other places to consider when Planning travel to Kailua-Kona: Hulihee Palace compound Kokuaikaua Church Kamehameha in Kamakahonu Bay, Kona Wine Market at affordable prices, and memorabilia. Include a Luau his journey, went to the Island Breeze Luau, because it was right on the beach resort of King Kamehameha at Kailua Pier.

Along the coast Kohala, road trip takes you north in some villages like Hawi. The road ends a few miles past Hawi, where you can see the valley Pololu of (very dramatic!). But first, a tour Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm in the laboratory of natural energy, the seahorse farm in the United States alone. Walk in Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kamehameha temple to the god of war for success in the battle. Continue to roll up Highway 270 in North Kohala on the Lapakahi State Historic Park for a view of a typical village of the 14th century, Hawaii and Luakini Mo'okini Heiau. The original statue of Kamehameha along this road and the prospect of Maui. About a mile from the Pololu research, enjoy a picnic in the park Keokee Beach. On the way back, take a look at District Puako Petroglyph Archaeological.

Throughout the south coast of Kona, you will find in Captain Cook Kealakekua Bay, the place of refuge and Honaunau Bay. All these factors make the exploration of a perfect day to add to your travel planner on the road with sites and historical monuments, great panoramic shots of the bay and diving / swimming in the bay of Honaunau, considered the second best place to snorkel or dive with turtles, fish and huge coral growths!

Now it is time to move its headquarters Hilo side to give you time to explore the Volcanoes National Park Hawaii. Leaving Kailua-Kona, to include in their travel planning road stops at South Point (the southernmost point of the United States), baker in Naalehu Punaluu, and Punaluu Black Sand Beach.

We spend not enough time National Park Hawaii Volcanoes because the guard told us that the lava was being out of the park (in August 2008, one hour the end of the 130 freeway in Kaimu, then walking 20 minutes on the use of lava beds in the display area). Allow two days in your schedule road trips to fully explore the Kilauea Visitor Center, Halemaumau Crater, Thurston Lava Tube, Devastation Trail, and a unit of the crater rim and make the trip at sunset lava. Local Shannon Cormie said: "Watch the band of red lava snake its way along the side of the mountain and then Thunder in the ocean is a sight you will never forget.

One reason advanced for the downtown Hilo and planning travel because it is so lush! David Carpenter, a local recommended Akatsuka orchid gardens for its large variety of orchids. It is located halfway between the volcano and Hilo. Shannon recommends Banyan Drive, Liliuokalani Gardens, Lyman Museum and Mission House, the Pacific Tsunami Museum, and the beautiful botanical gardens as Nani Mau Gardens Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, and World Botanical Garden.

From there, take in planning your road trip up Hamakua Coast, stopping at Akaka Falls and lunch in Honokaa. So take a look at Waipio Valley, the cradle of Hawaiian kings, before leaving for Waimea, a city cowboy with the Visitor Center Parker Ranch & Museum as the focal point.

Pencil in a day to complete your travel planner to explore Mauna Kea. Rent one at the wheel four vehicles to climb on top (13796 feet) or book a day excursion track where guides will take you to hidden waterfalls, sacred sites and an observatory, treasured by astronomers around the world.

All that will fill your Big Island Road Trip to brim. And they will discover new places as well. Do not be discouraged if no aa all the tour, which will have the perfect excuse to fill a Another trip planner route to your next visit!

Is it still possible/legal to walk along the glowing, flowing lava on Hawaii?

~7 years ago during a trip to Hawaii I drove down a crater near the south end of the Big Island well after dark and joined a stream of dozens of people on an unorganized hike part of the way up an erupting volcano. The lava was flowing from the source slowly and predictably, such that you could walk safely alongside and above it. You could stand mere inches from the flows, feel the intense heat, toss objects into the lava and watch them conflagrate, etc.

In advance of my upcoming return to Big Island, I've asked for advice on how and where to experience this again. The feeback I've gotten so far has been either that this is no longer possible, or people simply are not aware of where to safely walk the volcanos at night. I would greatly appreciate some definitive advice on whether and where I could again experience the magic of walking among the flowing lava.

Thanks!

I live on Oahu and have been to the Big Island about 5 times over the last 10 years, every time visiting Volcanoes National Park hoping see flowing lava. I too was there 7 years ago (May 2003), and like you, was able to walk to the surface flows about 2 miles from the end of Chain of Craters Road. By-the-way, it WAS legal at that time. There currently are surface flows, but unfortunately you can't reach them legally. Here's a link to the USGS website for Kilauea: http://volcano.wr.usgs.gov/kilaueastatus.php

The last time I went to the Big Island was last July 2009. Because hiking to the surface flow was illegal at that time, we decided to take a lava ocean tour. It was amazing! The boat literally takes you within yards of the ocean entries. Now we did see dozens of people who hiked the 10 mile or so round trip to the surface flow, but, according to our tour guide, they all were facing a possible $3,000 fine.

Just like the other guy said hiking to lava is pretty dangerous. You did it once before, remember how treacherous the conditions were? There's no other hiking like it in the world. And that was on a path or area that was deemed safe by park rangers. The whole reason the current flows are illegal to hike to is because the conditions are dangerous. You are literally risking your life if you decide to make the hike. Now, with that said, I believe the closest access to the current flow is from the Kalapana side of Chain of Craters Road, not the park side.
