President Bush and several other politicians are pushing for a massive campaign to rebuild the region devastated the Gulf Coast. The estimates Figure below have reconstruction costs associated with $ 200 million, while some said that when all is said and done the project of one billion dollars. No doubt this project will be the most massive renewal ever undertaken in the history of the world. Can we afford this project? How we pay for? All Americans should reflect on this project before giving its okay. Do not listen to politicians? Without doubt remains to be seen.
We have all been captivated by the human drama that unfolded before our eyes since Hurricane Katrina battered the east coast last August. People uprooted from their roofs by U.S. Coast Guard, children separated from their parents, chaos in the Superdome, bodies floating in the streets around the courtroom, and more. These are some images that we've all seen. Only a hard heart can not fail to be affected in some way by the witness scenes in our televisions.
In a few weeks, calls for rebuilding the region of the Gulf Coast have been mentioned by the President Bush and other politicians and media coverage. Many have stressed that we can not let a major American city remain destroyed, that reconstruction should occur. At any price, any price.
Personally, I expect a certain amount of discussion that occurs before the money is spent. So far, no real amount above, is what makes to hold onto my wallet for their lives. No, I'm not against helping people. What I do object to the reconstruction in the regions who are prone to the devastation and loss of future life. Frankly, I do not know if there is money that could happen - even if we had - That would protect the residents of the area must repeat the performance never meet, which is likely to recur.
Some questions I want to see addressed:
How many people who left New Orleans want to return? The last figures I saw was that half and about half of what you do not want to return. Manufactured why we must build a city on the same scale as the old New Orleans, or not?
What are the long-term effects of the toxic bilge? The floor is permanently contain contaminants that could harm the health of residents?
The current levee system is inadequate. Did not make sense to have a new system in place before the massive rebuilding begins?
Who will have authority over the funds? And local politicians, state whose administration before the area is suspect to say the least? The federal government? Independent body? Who?
Will we be able to divert funds from projects of pork meat now scheduled to be funded? I heard of two bridges in Alaska, which are essentially bridges to nowhere. Are U.S. senators and congressmen willing to sacrifice to achieve a pork project to pay for this project?
About that reductions in military spending to help fund the project? No, I do not speak reductions in Iraq, but why do we still have a significant military presence in Europe? The Cold War ended more than fifteen years, Europe is unable to defend themselves?
I know some of these questions may sound ruthless, but it deserves to be asked. An emotional response the devastation, with a blank check means it is likely that our children and our grandchildren will have to pay the bill, perhaps long after that many of us left.
Really hope that we can think this through. My fear is that we will not and we saddle the future generations a terrible burden.
