When looking for a good GPS, it is easy to get overwhelmed when you compare the many features that are available. First, decide what you intend to use the GPS. If it was just for use in the car, there would be need of some characteristics that appeal to hikers, boaters and pilots. Some other features will require that you pay an additional monthly fee, while the system GPS satellite is free to use. Everything you need is a GPS receiver and some batteries and you're good to go.

Screen
One of the most important one is the GPS screen. Search Screen that is easy to read LCD displays have color high contrast. A transflective display is easier to see in sunlight. If the model you choose, do not have a transflective screen, you might consider to add a bell on the display unit.

Panel Mount
If you use the GPS in your car or boat, will find a package that includes an easy to install panel mounting.

Touch screen navigation
Touch screen navigation is a feature that makes navigation as simple as tapping the screen instead of clicking the buttons.

Voice instructions
Audio Quality is important. Look for excellent audio quality with enough volume control. You should be able to hear the instructions even if you drive to a speed higher, people are talking, or listening to the radio. Some units have built very powerful speakers, while others have FM transmitter which addresses issues with the car.

Roads
A very useful feature is the ability to load and retrieve previously used routes. This feature also store all points of interest along the route and directions reverse.

Trip Computer
An onboard computer display useful data such as trip distance, odometer, average speed, current speed, length of trip, trip and timer.

Alarms
The units are available that will alert you if you're not sure, approach and the next arrival, and coming attractions. If you use GPS on your boat, you are warned of shallow water and obstructions.

Basemap Units
Look for receivers that are being integrated into the mapping software. A good program should include major roads, cities, rivers, lakes and airports. An important feature is the ability to download data easily updated and more detailed mapping as it becomes available. You may need to purchase additional software, but the ability to access the location of stations, banks, restaurants and off-road trails is precious. You want a system that allows you to update the maps so you can still access to new roads or changes.

Start-Up Time
Shop for a unit that has a faster start up time. A satellite that is connected to 32 satellites will be launched more quickly than that connects to 12 years.

Technology
Any system should encompass the Sirf III chip. This the latest technology and quickly locate the satellites. Models do not understand that this should be avoided.

Portability
The ability to remove the GPS unit in your car is important if you plan to do any hiking or hunting.

General
Although the characteristics Additional capacity will not affect the access of addresses and locations can be great fun. There some systems that allow you to play XM radio, DVD's, MP3 and video.
