Garmin eTrex Legend HCx?

I picked this unit as it seems to fit all of my needs. Road trips, boating trips on unknown small lakes in Ontario, some hiking usually on well beaten trails, as well I may rent a vehicle in other countries(Costa Rica,Cuba ect.). What I need to know is to get use of this unit will I have to purchase Mapsource Metrostreets for Canada and Mapsource Topomap of Canada or is that overkill? Can maps from other sources work with this unit? I haven't bought the unit yet is there a better choice for Canadian use?

My experience is that only mapsource works with Garmin GPS's
